In the spotlight: Data Privacy
The collection, analysis and use of personal and commercial data became a key issue of modern information and communication technology and, therefore, are currently part of the focus of work of the e-center. A particularly controversial issue in this context is the Data Retention Directive which requires providers of publicly available electronic communications services or of public communications networks to provide a nationwide retention of certain technical data without any given suspicion.
The e-center delivered a critical opinion on the draft of a new national bill implementing this Directive in Austria which in combination with other opinions has led to a deferment of the planned implementation. The e-center recently published a profound analysis of this topic as well as of the controversial amendment of the Security Police Act (Sicherheitspolizeigesetz) and of Online House Searches – all changes which result in a major impairment of Data Privacy:
